Buyer’s guide
Pop-ups exist because towing a box is expensive. Folded down, they present almost no frontal area, so fuel economy barely changes and most mid-size SUVs and crossovers can tow one without any special equipment.
The trade-off is setup and weather. Raising a pop-up takes five to fifteen minutes, and canvas sides mean you hear and feel the outdoors — wonderful in mild weather, less so in a cold snap or heavy rain. Look for models with a hard roof and a furnace if you camp in shoulder season.
Check what is included. Basic tent campers give you beds and a dinette; higher trims add a sink, two- or three-burner stove, fridge, furnace and even a cassette toilet or outdoor shower.
Questions
Most weigh 1,000–3,000 lb, so a mid-size SUV, minivan or small pickup with a 2,000–3,500 lb tow rating handles them comfortably. Many crossovers rated at 1,500 lb can tow the smallest models.
Yes when properly maintained. The canvas is treated and seams are sealed, but it must be dried completely before storage or it will mildew. Reproof the canvas every couple of seasons.
Five to fifteen minutes once you have done it a few times — levelling, cranking the roof up, sliding out the bunk ends and securing the canvas. Takedown is similar.
With a furnace and thermal liners, comfortably down to around freezing. Below that, canvas loses heat faster than the furnace can replace it, and condensation becomes a problem.
