Buyer’s guide

How to choose a camper van

Camper vans trade space for freedom. Nothing else lets you park in a city street, fit a standard garage and still sleep, cook and shower. If your trips are about where you go rather than where you stay, this is the category.

The chassis defines the experience. Mercedes Sprinter offers the best ride and 4x4 options; Ram ProMaster is front-wheel-drive with a wider, boxier interior that is easier to lay out; Ford Transit sits between the two with strong dealer coverage.

Be realistic about the bathroom. Most vans use a wet bath where the shower and toilet share a cubicle, and some skip it entirely for a cassette toilet and outdoor shower. Decide early — it drives the whole floor plan.

Best for

  • Parks anywhere a large van does — including cities
  • Best fuel economy of any motorised RV
  • Genuinely usable as a daily driver
  • Excellent for boondocking and off-grid travel

Worth considering

  • Least interior space — usually sleeps two
  • Small tanks mean frequent water and waste stops
  • Highest cost per square foot in the RV market
  • Wet baths are compact and take getting used to

Questions

Camper Van FAQs

Can a camper van be a daily driver?

Yes — that is one of the main reasons people buy them. They fit standard parking spaces, clear most garages at around 9–10 ft tall, and drive like a tall van. Check your garage height before you buy.

How long can you boondock in a camper van?

Typically two to four days on fresh water, and longer if you are careful with showers. Solar and lithium batteries make electricity a non-issue for most people; water and grey tank capacity are the real constraints.

Why are camper vans so expensive?

The van chassis alone is a significant cost, and everything inside is custom-fitted into an irregular shell in low volumes. You pay for engineering density rather than square footage.

Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster?

Sprinter for ride quality, diesel economy and 4x4 availability. ProMaster for the widest, squarest interior and lowest price, with front-wheel drive. Transit for a balance of the two with the broadest service network.
